  • Certificate in Spanish for the Clinical Encounter

The Spanish for the Clinical Encounter Certificate aims to provide students conversational and cultural competency in Spanish so they can work professionally in a clinical or medical setting with native speakers of the language. Certificate courses build students’ knowledge and confidence in speaking Spanish from a Beginning Level to an Intermediate Level. Interactions and projects for all courses focus on the clinical setting to help students understand how to overcome linguistic barriers and gain cultural competencies that foster patient-practitioner relationships and build trust.

    Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this certificate, students will have obtained skills in speaking, listening, writing, and reading in Spanish at the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Intermediate Level as well as an understanding of various cultural norms throughout the Spanish-speaking world as they pertain to the clinical setting.

    Students will be able to:

    • use basic Spanish grammatical structures and vocabulary along with familiar cognate words and expressions.
    • implement new Spanish vocabulary, including body parts, numbers, the alphabet, days of the week and months of the year, telling time, and frequently used medical terminology.
    • engage in introductory conversations in Spanish using greetings, Q&A, and hold a routine dialogue.
    • recognize and employ fundamental verb tenses and grammatical constructions: the present tense, the present progressive, the simple future, the conditional tense, the future tense, and two of the past tenses (the preterit indefinite, the preterit imperfect).
    • communicate effectively in Spanish using medical-related vocabulary and grammar that pertain to the clinical setting.
    • identify and operate with a variety of idiomatic expressions used throughout the Spanish-speaking world as they pertain to Spanish-speaking patients and family members that they will encounter in the clinical setting, which may include discussion of preventative measures, disease processes, bedside manner, and more.
    • integrate an understanding of fundamental Spanish language and cultural knowledge into their career in health care.
