How to Hire an International Student
Have you ever considered hiring an international student? The Office of Career Services, with the aid of the Office of International Programs, has put together this informational page for employers to learn more about F-1 Visas, a student visa which allows foreign nationals to study and work temporarily in the United States.
F-1 Visa Explained
An F-1 Visa is a student visa that allows foreign nationals to enter the United States to pursue full-time academic studies at a college, university, or other academic institution. F-1 visa holders are also authorized to work in their field of study while living in the United States. F-1 students may engage in three types of Practical Training (PT).
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is only available to students while they are enrolled in a degree program, must be directly related to their field of study, and students must receive academic credit for work experience. Through cooperative agreements with USCA, an employer can hire CPT-eligible students. Examples of CPT include cooperative education (co-ops), internships, and practicums.
Optional Practical Training (OPT), similar to CPT, enables F-1 students to gain hands-on experience in their field either before (Pre-completion OPT) or after (Post-completion OPT) they have completed a degree program for a combined total of 12 months. It differs from CPT in that OPT does not have to be for academic credit.
Students earning certain STEM-related degrees are given a two-year work authorization extension once they have completed the first 12 months of OPT.
