  • Eligibility

To be eligible for services, students must provide medical documentation that provides information about a substantial limitation to one or more major life activities, specifically as it applies to meeting the demands of university life, in and/or out of the classroom.

Although some disabilities do not change over time, the medical documentation must address the student’s current level of functioning. IEP’s and 504 Plans, although providing historical evidence of services and accommodations, are generally not considered sufficient to make a student eligible for services. However, in all situations, every student will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

    Disability or Temporary Condition?

A disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more life activities, such as caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, and working.

Several temporary conditions are excluded from the category of disability, and therefore, individuals with these conditions are ineligible for services through the Office of Disability Services.

A student who believes their condition to be temporary may contact the Student Life and Services Office by calling 803-641-3577.

    Confidentiality

Disability documentation is confidential and does not become part of a student’s academic transcript. All disability-related information is maintained in the Office of Disability Services. Disability documentation shall be released only by the law and USCA policies and procedures.

    Disclosing Disability

Students are not obligated to disclose their disability unless an accommodation is requested; likewise, faculty and staff have no authority to see disability documentation or have any information concerning a student’s disability without a legitimate educational need to know. Pending the receipt of appropriate documentation, Disability Services reserves the right to deny any accommodation requests.
