The Writing Center

Writing Center

Fall hours coming soon--grand reopening on Tuesday, September 2.

What We Do

The Writing Center is an inclusive campus resource that provides one-on-one guidance to students at any stage of the writing process. The Writing Center is staffed by undergraduate students, professional tutors, and professors trained to provide feedback on various writing genres. We offer in-person and online appointments and walk-ins based on availability. Our services are free of charge for all members of the USCA community. We offer assistance in the following areas:

  • Brainstorming
  • Citations
  • Clarity
  • Creative writing
  • Deconstructing assignments
  • Disciplinary writing conventions
  • Editing
  • Grammar
  • Organization
  • Outlining
  • Professional documents
  • Revision
  • Rhetorical decisions
  • Writing Anxiety

How to Use the Writing Center

Because the Writing Center focuses on student learning, awareness, and independence, consultants cannot “proofread" or edit drafts. Rather, Writing Center consultants are trained to help students to become better editors and proofreaders of their own drafts.

Here are a few things that you should keep in mind to get the most out of your Writing Center consultation:

  • Make an appointment early. This will guarantee that a consultant will be available to help you when you need one.
  • Have some questions/concerns in mind. Consultations are between 30 minutes and an hour long, so there will not be time to analyze/correct every problem in your paper.
  • Have documents and instructions for assignments available. Access to assignment sheets, syllabuses, research, earlier drafts or notes, professor feedback, and other documents will be useful during the consultation.
  • Keep an open mind about writing and the writing process. Any criticism is constructive and intended to improve your writing.
  • Be conscientious of your schedule. The amount of time that you have to work on your paper is an integral part of determining what you will have time to do.
