Kaylee Anne Siebert, a senior studying business administration with a concentration on accounting, has always been passionate about math and aspires to become a teacher one day.

However, after a first-hand experience teaching math at a summer camp at the University of Leicester, she changed direction. “While it was great, it was not for me, and I knew I wanted something with math but not teaching. So that’s how I ended up in accounting,” Siebert said.

Siebert knew she wanted to get experience working in accounting while still in college. After an online job board search and application process, she accepted an open accounting internship position at Ernst & Young in Charlotte, North Carolina. The company is a global professional services firm that provides consulting, assurance (audit), tax, and advisory services to clients across various industries. They help organizations manage risk, improve performance, and achieve growth through strategic guidance and innovative solutions.

Siebert spent the summer interning in the business property tax division and was able to work with a specific client, focusing on that client’s non-real estate property, office equipment, and computers taxed by jurisdiction.

When asked about the benefits of internships, Siebert said that gaining experience from companies like Ernst & Young is very insightful. “College gives you all the information but not much practical, real-world application,” she said. Siebert added that the knowledge she’s learned about accounting and taxes has given her the tools she needed to better under the profession.

After finishing her internship, Siebert received an invitation to return to Ernst and Young next year. She plans to gather more insights and explore auditing. She understands the importance of hands-on experience and believes that internships during college are crucial for preparing students for the professional world.
