The assembled audience of students, faculty, and staff shared laughter and tears as the USCA School of Nursing honored former Dean Dr. Thayer McGahee with a portrait unveiling in the lobby of the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building on Monday, Oct. 30.

The event began with Dr. Katie Chargualaf, who praised McGahee for her significant contributions to the School of Nursing and the broader campus community. Starting her career as an assistant professor, McGahee dedicated 20 years to the institution, notably expanding the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program to the USC Sumter and USC Union campuses.

“Dr. McGahee played a key role in securing nearly two million dollars in funding for enhanced simulation equipment,” highlighted Dr. Heimmermann, chancellor of USCA.

Lisa Simmons, a faculty member and close colleague, shared her experiences under McGahee’s leadership. She recounted a humorous moment while working on a medication calculation test for child health instruction. After struggling with one question for three and a half hours, McGahee reassured her by admitting she had also found it challenging. “I felt so relieved. I wasn’t the only one,” Simmons said. She also emphasized McGahee’s kindness throughout her time at USCA.

Chargualaf noted the nursing program’s success, stating, “To date, USCA’s School of Nursing has graduated two cohorts from Sumter and Union, all of whom passed their NCLEX exam on the first attempt. Under McGahee’s leadership, our RBSN program has seen remarkable growth, expanding from just a few students to over 300.”

McGahee served as Interim Provost of Academic Affairs before retiring in July.

McGahee’s portrait will now join a collection honoring past leaders of the School of Nursing. “These portraits serve as a reminder of the great leaders who have tirelessly contributed to our program's success,” Chargualaf remarked.
