Concert Choir to Perform Sacred Music

April 21, 2025 • Angela Saxon

The University of South Carolina Aiken’s Concert Choir will host its spring performance, "The Humble Heart: Sacred Music Traditions of Europe & America."

Audiences are invited to enjoy the richness of musical and cultural heritage at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Sunday, April 27, at 4:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

According to USCA’s choir director, Joel Scraper, the concert will be divided into two parts. “The first part of the program includes music representative of the Catholic or Anglican church, which flourished during the Renaissance,” he said. “The title of our program, The Humble Heart, is a fragment of text from a Shaker song. Our program spans 400 years of music, in a variety of settings and styles that are both beautiful and dramatic, challenging and rewarding, familiar and unfamiliar. The second half of the program captures these two traditions that are deeply ingrained into our American identity.”

The program also prepares the choir for its upcoming study abroad trip to Italy this summer. While overseas, the ensemble will perform in several historic churches, some over a thousand years old, in cities including Orvieto, Florence, Siena, and Rome. In addition to their performances, students will explore ruins, museums, art galleries, and other significant cultural landmarks.
