In August, U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson took to the road again with his annual district-wide bus tour, a long-standing tradition he describes as a learning experience, a chance to connect with local communities and a source of inspiration

As students went back to class, Tuesday, Aug. 19, Wilson stopped by USCA, reflecting on the value of direct engagement with local communities and youth, as well as university’s expanding leadership in cybersecurity and advanced manufacturing.

“This tour really is a chance for me to see firsthand the incredible work being done across the district.” Wilson said. “It’s inspirational to meet so many talented people making a difference. Whether it's schools, businesses, or local governments, everyone can improve their communities.”

One major focus of Wilson’s visit was education and youth involvement. He emphasized the value of internship opportunities, noting that his offices in Aiken, West Columbia and Washington, D.C., run one of the largest congressional internship programs.

“I started my career as an intern for U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond, so I know how important those experiences are,” he said. “We’ve had interns from right here in Aiken and across the world—from Bangkok, Thailand, Sovia, Bulgaria, and Stockholm. Internships give young people real-world opportunities and often create lifelong friendships and professional connections.”

Wilson also praised USCA for its growing role in cybersecurity and clean energy research, referencing the recent opening of the Cyber Integration Center and the Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative (AMC). He credited regional partnerships and leadership, including the Savannah River Site, Fort Gordon’s U.S. Army Cyber Command, and the support of local, state and federal officials for helping position the area as a future hub for technological advancement.

“Aiken is the right place at the right time,” Wilson said. “With our proximity to major defense and energy assets, and with the dedication of leaders like Gov. Henry McMaster and Senator Lindsey Graham, USCA is becoming a true center of innovation.”

The congressman also took time to visit North Augusta Elementary School earlier in the day, where he was especially struck by the positivity of both students and faculty. “I’ve never seen such happy teachers in my life,” he said with a smile. “It’s clear that there’s a real enthusiasm for learning there.”

In closing, Wilson expressed deep gratitude for the communities he serves and reaffirmed his commitment to policies that support education, workforce development and economic growth. “This tour is about thanking people, listening and being inspired,” he said. “And what I see across this district gives me hope every single year.”
