From a small town near Champaign, Illinois, to Aiken, South Carolina, Taylor Joop, a graduating senior from the School of Nursing at USCA, has embraced every challenge and opportunity that came her way. A student-athlete turned standout nursing major and now selected as the Outstanding Senior Student for December Commencement.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “It’s such an honor. I know I work hard, but it’s special to know others see that, too. To be chosen among so many amazing graduates is just incredible.”

Joop’s journey to USCA a story of perseverance, balance and passion for helping others.

A Journey from the Midwest to USCA

Joop began her college career at a community college in Illinois, where she competed in cross country. During that time, she discovered her passion for healthcare and decided to pursue nursing. When looking for a university to continue her education, Joop searched for a school that would allow her to combine both her academic and athletic interests.

“I always wanted to go somewhere different,” Joop said. “Coach Marshall Leonard recruited me for cross country, and when I learned about the nursing program at USCA, it just felt right. It was random how I ended up here, but I’ve loved every moment.”

With the support of Coach Leonard and the nursing program, Joop transferred to USCA, ready to chase her dreams, both on the track and in the classroom.

Balancing Nursing and Athletics

The demanding schedule of nursing school is no easy feat, let alone while competing in collegiate athletics. For Joop, time management and a good planner became her best friends.

“The first semester was a whirlwind,” she admitted. “Nursing school is already tough and adding cross country on top of that was a lot. I had to plan everything out and rely on support from my parents and friends. But it taught me so much about discipline and balance.”

Joop competed for three semesters on the cross-country team, later earning the Peach Belt Conference Elite 18 Award, given to the athlete with the highest GPA in their sport. “I’ve always taken pride in my academics,” she said. “My parents instilled the importance of doing my best in everything, and that’s stuck with me.”

Finding Purpose in Nursing

Joop’s interest in healthcare began at a young age. “I’ve always been fascinated by the human body,” she said with a smile. “At first, I wanted to be a doctor, but I realized I didn’t want to be in school that long. Nursing gave me a way to care for people directly while still having many different paths to grow in.”

Throughout her time at USCA, Joop has excelled in the nursing program. She tutors underclassmen, volunteers her time helping an elderly woman with Parkinson’s and dementia and continues to serve as a role model for her peers.

“She’s the sweetest woman,” Joop said of her patient companion. “Helping her with errands, cooking, and just being a friend has been one of the most rewarding parts of my semester.”

Looking Ahead

After graduation, Joop will begin her career at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois, working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) a dream position for her.

“I love babies, and I’m so excited to start this next chapter,” she said. “Eventually, I’d like to go back to school to become a nurse practitioner or earn a master’s degree, but for now, I’m just thrilled to start where I am.”

Mentorship and Gratitude

Joop credits her success to the support of her family, friends and the nursing faculty who guided her through every challenge.

“My mom has been my biggest supporter,” she said. “And my best friends in the nursing program have truly gotten me through it all. As for professors, Dr. Sonya Edwards, Professor Lisa Simmons, and especially Professor Mary Kennedy, who nominated me for this award, have been amazing. They genuinely care about us, and that makes such a difference.”

Advice for Future Students

For students hoping to balance athletics, academics, or the demanding world of nursing, Joop offers heartfelt advice:

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek help. Find your group, people who will hold you accountable and support you. And get a planner!” she laughed. “Your coaches and professors want you to succeed, so communicate with them. No matter your age or background, if you put your mind to it, you can absolutely do it.”
