Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) recently donated $5,000 to the Veteran and Military Student Success (VMSS) on USCA’s campus.

The contribution will help VMSS continue its mission of supporting veterans in their academic and career success while also expanding internship and co-op opportunities within local communities.

“To our students, I want to make sure that you are all aware that this donation opens up opportunities for our veteran and military students in the fields of engineering, applied computer science and business, including potential internships down the road,” said Tristen Stone, VMSS program coordinator.

"Since opening the VMSS Center in 2012, partnerships like the one with SRMC have been critical to expanding education and career opportunities for our veteran students” said Robert Murphy, executive director of Military Affairs and External Programs. “SRMC has supported military Pacers from day one, and their continued investment demonstrates real leadership in veteran student success."

Among those who see the impact of this funding firsthand is Cadet Irvon Malcolm, a senior majoring in computer science with a focus in cybersecurity. He said the donation will make a significant difference for students like him.

“I’ll be graduating in May 2026, and now I’m really focused on planning my next steps,” he said. “I’ve been so focused on school and now it’s crunch time for my career. So having that extra boost, knowing there’s something out there actually helping me help myself toward that career, it’s super helpful.”

Malcolm added that VMSS has played an essential role in helping veteran and military students succeed both academically and personally.

“They help with all kinds of things, whether you need to get in contact with an advisor, need extra help with tutoring, or just need somewhere to sit down and have somebody to talk to, a quiet place to study. There’s so much that this offers,” he said.

Justin Schulte, vice president of Design and Project Engineering for SRMC, emphasized that partnerships like this are vital for student development and career readiness. He noted that SRMC currently offers several summer internship opportunities.

“We hire a number of interns from the engineering, computer science, and applied mathematics fields into our organization,” Schulte said. “We’re really excited to have veteran students come in, evaluate those opportunities, and learn from us, and for us to learn from them as well.”

Schulte added that students interested in applying for SRMC summer internships should do so by the Jan. 31, 2026, deadline. Just like VMSS’s mission, SRMC’s $5,000 donation aligns with championing veterans and service members by providing the best educational opportunities possible.
