Commencement Marks a Milestone for the Class of 2025
The University of South Carolina Aiken celebrated its May Commencement on Wednesday, May 7, at the Convocation Center. More than 400 undergraduate and graduate students crossed the stage to receive their degrees, supported by proud family members and friends.

Words of Encouragement from USC’s President
Dr. Michael Amiridis, the 30th president of the University of South Carolina, delivered a welcome message that blended humor and heartfelt encouragement.

“You probably have noticed how quiet the family and friends of the graduates have been so far. Maybe they’re intimidated by the fancy regalia we’re wearing or all the corporate symbols of this ceremony,” he joked. “But make no mistake—this is the part, and I want them to express some of those feelings they’ve been holding back.”

A first-generation college graduate himself, Amiridis reflected on the challenges many students face and the importance of the support systems that help them succeed.

“You have benefited from the support of many people who have invested in your success—your family, friends, the chancellor, the faculty who taught you, and the staff who assisted you, even those you may have never met,” he said.

He concluded with a quote from Aristotle: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is never an accident…”

A Historic Milestone
This year’s ceremony also marked a historic first: the graduation of the inaugural cohort from the USCA LIFE Program, a two-year initiative designed for students with intellectual disabilities. Thirteen students earned the Promoting Academic, Community, & Employment Readiness (PACER) credential, a significant step toward expanding access and inclusion in higher education.

Dr. Melissa Martin, director of USCA LIFE, noted that several graduates will continue in the university’s Leadership and Civic Engagement (LCE) program. One has already secured employment with Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), and others are working or volunteering across the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA).

Looking Ahead
“The Class of 2025 represents our renewed hope for the future of our community, nation, and world,” said Dr. Daniel Heimmermann, USCA Chancellor.

The ceremony also included the commissioning of four ROTC cadets, Christian Brunson, Danielle Brown, Casey Barrett, and Jalen Tangaan, into the United States Army, adding to the day’s significance.

Recognizing Excellence
Rachel Eubanks, a dual-degree graduate in Psychology and English, was named the Outstanding Senior Student. Eubanks maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA, published peer-reviewed work in both creative writing and psychology, won the Phebe Davidson Prize in Creative Writing, and was inducted into the Robert E. Alexander Hall of Fame for Leadership.

Student Reflections
Makayla Adams, who graduated magna cum laude with a degree in secondary education, expressed her excitement about becoming a teacher.

“I’ve always wanted to teach ever since I was little, so now I finally get to live out that dream,” she said.

Though she described the moment as bittersweet, Adams reflected fondly on her time at USCA.

“I enjoyed my four years here by getting involved and making an impact. I’m excited to see what the future holds for the next generation of students.”

She will begin her teaching career at Mossy Creek Elementary in North Augusta—the same school she attended as a child. “It’s cool because I went there kindergarten through second grade,” she added.

Kelly Palacios, a rising senior majoring in criminal justice with a minor in sociology, also shared her pride in the graduating class. As the newly elected Student Government Association president, she’s looking ahead with optimism.

“I’m thrilled about what lies ahead,” Palacios said. “I have plenty of ideas, and I’m confident that with the support of my amazing cabinet, we’ll open the door to many new opportunities in the coming school year.”
