USCA memorial scholarship created to honor alumna and former employee

USCA honors former alumna and employee with scholarship named in her honor.
With the support of staff, an associate professor at the University of South Carolina Aiken has established a scholarship to honor and remember Kimberely Gomillion, a creative alumna and former employee who unexpectedly passed away earlier this year.
USCA Associate Photography Professor Ginny Southworth has donated $3,000 to create the Kimberely Gomillion Memorial Art Scholarship. Inspired by Southworth’s act of generosity, USCA Director of Financial Aid Jack Edwards has pledged an additional $1,000 to help grow the fund.
Gomillion, 25, unexpectedly passed away on January 11, 2025, during a striped bass fishing tournament at Lake Hartwell. Southworth taught Gomillion while she was a student at USCA. Edwards was Gomillion’s supervisor when she worked at the university.
"Kimberely was a creative and loving young lady, and an attentive and compassionate public servant," Southworth said. "Her unexpected passing was not only a tragic loss for USCA, but the entire community. This scholarship will honor her memory by helping identify others who share her passion for art and art history."
The Kimberely Gomillion Memorial Art Scholarship will provide scholarships to rising juniors and seniors at USCA who are full-time students pursuing a degree in art or art history. Students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and demonstrate unmet financial need.
Gomillion graduated from USCA with a degree in Fine Arts. She spent her short career working at the university as a Financial Aid Counselor/Scholarship Coordinator. On campus, she was known for her love of the outdoors and passion for the arts, particularly creative writing, drawing, painting and music.
