A member of USCA’s Reserve Officer Training Corp detachment has been selected to attend the Student Veterans of America (SVA) Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C., Oct. 15-19.

Kay Bullock, USCA ‘27, is a business finance major and president of the university’s Student Veteran Organization.  She serves in the South Carolina Army National Guard and holds several leadership positions on campus.  Her leadership responsibilities include Student Government Association veteran’s senator, student advocate for USCA’s Office of Veteran and Military Student Success and platoon leader in the university’s ROTC cadre.

She credits USCA and her leadership roles for helping secure her selection for the SVA leadership program in the national capital.

“Being selected for the leadership institute means that every role I take on campus is recognized, and juggling all my responsibilities means something. Due to putting so much on my shoulders and carrying it well, I now get to represent the university that helped me grow into a better version of myself,” Bullock said.

“USCA is one of the best schools in South Carolina and should be represented as such.”

The annual SVA Leadership Institute offers participants leadership development opportunities and access to military and governmental leaders.  Attendees, like Bullock, are chosen from a national pool of nominees.

“Kay Bullock's selection to attend the 2025 Student Veterans of America Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C., demonstrates how USCA positions students to succeed,” said Robert Murphy, executive director of military affairs and external programs.

“Staff members, like Tristan Stone, program coordinator for the Veteran and Military Student Success Office, actively connect students with meaningful leadership opportunities beyond our campus."

SVA has chapters on more than 1,600 campuses located throughout the nation and overseas.  The organization aims to help student veterans meet their educational and professional goals.

Bullock plans to serve as an officer in the U.S. Army’s finance corps once she graduates.  She would also like to be a finance coach, improving others’ financial literacy.

The Army ROTC program at USCA, known as the Pacer Detachment, includes graduate and undergraduate students majoring in all disciplines.  It is open to qualified high school seniors as well.

“Our diverse group of students trains together as part of a team. The ROTC cadet leadership and staff partner with our students to help them achieve their goals and discover life-changing education here at USCA,” Murphy said.
